Kearney NE US 68847 professor retired Married 3
I recently attended an amazing meeting. There I was sitting in a conference room at the Kearney Public Library among 10 or so individuals—all of whom are members of the Kearney high School graduating class of 1963—several of whom I had not seen in nearly half a century. Amazing! Purpose of the meeting: to plan the 2013 reunion of the KHS class of ’63. Has it really been nearly 50 years? Amazing!

All of which has prompted me to quit procrastinating (not wise at 67), and finally provide some information to post on this incredible web site.

Where to begin? I suppose the place to start is immediately post high school graduation when I took off for Denver to avoid school and put my typing and shorthand skills to some professional use (thank you Miss Shanklin). Alas, I was never particularly proficient at either, and a rather long and winding road took me to Scottsbluff, Ne., where my fortunes changed—thanks to timing and luck. I was able to land a job at the Scottsbluff Star-Herald newspaper as a reporter. Based on a recommendation from my high school journalism teacher (thank you Mrs. McKenzie), I was hired on a three-month probationary period. I always was pretty adept at stringing words together into fairly coherent sentences; however, I had much to learn about journalism. A couple of seasoned editors mentored me, thereby laying a foundation that would well serve a lifelong career. Luck and timing.

I met my husband, Tom, in Scottsbluff, and in 1973 we landed in Kearney. This was to be temporary while Tom, fresh with a teaching degree, and I found employment preferably in a city far away from hometown and Nebraska. Note: some 40 years later, Kearney, Ne., remains home to us.

I worked as a report/editor for the Kearney Hub for nearly a decade. During that time I also had to get going on improving my education so I juggled kids, husband, and job duties with college classrooms and study. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Kearney State College in 1978, my master’s also from KSC in 1982. In the meantime, I began teaching a course or two in the Journalism Department at KSC. Again, timing and luck on my side, I became a full-time faculty member in 1982. I received a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1996.

For the past 30 years at the University of Nebraska at Kearney I taught courses in media law, communications research and theory, as well as reporting and writing classes. I have published numerous articles in scholarly journals, and, in 2005, a textbook. For the past several years I served as the associate dean of graduate studies and research.

Today Tom and I are just settling into retirement. Finally, the luxury of time for family, friends, and activities and projects too long ignored. Our daughters, Dawn and Tami, are in Minneapolis and Omaha, respectively. We have two smart (and beautiful) granddaughters, Ashley, 21, and Hannah, 14. Our son, Joey, who remains single, also is in Minneapolis.

I enjoy traveling, reading, swimming, growing flowers and a few veggies, and sewing 1940s and 1950s period clothes for my American Girl doll Molly, and more trendy AG outfits for charity (I work with the Salvation Army and Make-A-Wish Foundation). I am a member of the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the Cochlear Community of Volunteers, and the Kearney Public Library Advisory Board.

The "Now" photo, by the way, is of me a few years ago receiving an award during a trip to China. I was part of a delegation of faculty from UNK.

Well, fellow classmates, I will close this too long missive with the hope of connecting with many, many of you in the summer of 2013 in Kearney for our Golden High School Reunion.   –carol

July 13, 1945 Manhattan KS USA 66503 homemaker Married 3

My husband, George, is retired and we live a happy quiet life.  He drives his 58 chevy convertible in parades and I wave to the children.  Sometimes our border collie joins us.

Our son, Jeff, is an optometrist in Lee Summit, Mo.  He and Lori have 3 children, Konnor, Kaylie, and Kaden.

Jodi remarried this spring in our backyard. It was fun to prepare for and turned out well weatherwise.  Scott, Jodi, Nico and Emi live in Olathe, Ks.

Jill and Scott live here in Manhattan and have granddogs and cats for us.

I love history, reading, and gardening.  I volunteer at the hospital on Monday and Thursday afternoons, schedule volunteers for the geneology library once a month, and the days seem to be going way too fast.   I knit baby sweaters and sell them at the hospital gift shop.

Two weeks ago we celebrated our 50th anniversary before the grandkids returned to school.  Nineteen of us in Branson wearing t-shirts with our wedding picture on the front.

This week is the reunion and then we come home to celebrate George's 70th birthday.
That's my story....I loved what Sue said about delighting in each and every day.
